Port Elizabeth

Port Elizabeth is known as the "Friendly City" and overlooks Algoa Bay, and together with Despatch and Uitenhage, forms the Nelson Mandela Bay metropole.

Port Elizabeth was founded by the British in 1820 near the famous monument Fort Frederick built in 1799.

The city itself curves around the bay and rises up from the City Center over the Donkin Green to a plateau, leading to Newton Park, home of the Greenacres Shopping Centre and, continuing with Cape Road, to the residential areas of Framesby, Linton Grange and Kabega Park.

To the east, lies Summerstrand, the most popular beach area, home to the University of Port Elizabeth (UPE), and from there, inland to the residential suburb of Walmer.

Port Elizabeth is a major seaport that ships diamonds, wool, fruit, and other items from it's extensive harbour complex. Automobile assembly is the chief industry; shoe manufacturing, metal and timber processing, and electrical engineering are also based here. Food processing, tanning, and chemical production also predominate. A large industrial area stretches as far as Uitenhage, the home of the largest vehicle manufacturing and assembly industry in South Africa. The city has a population of approximately 1 million people.

The Coega Project is a multi-billion rand industrial development complex and deepwater port 20 kilometres east of the city of Port Elizabeth which could soon become the logistics hub for Southern African trade.
