World Cup Thoughts
The FIFA World Cup is the single-most watched sporting event world-wide, capturing the hearts of even non-football fans simply due to its sheer enormity, so as South Africa this year hosts the event and every South African's attention is trained on the spectacle, it becomes important to fully understand the tournament and how it is progressing.

The FIFA World Cup has been played every four years since 1930 (except in 1942 and 1946 when it was cancelled because of World War II) and now consists of 32 teams, including the host nation, divided into eight groups of four teams playing a total of 64 games collectively.

Each of the four teams in any given group play each other in a round-robin fashion working on a points basis, three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss, guaranteeing each team a minimum of three games.

Once the group stages are complete, the top two teams from each group progresses, and from that point onwards the competition enters the knockout stages, with extra-time and penalties coming into play when a winner cannot be established in the normal 90 minutes.

The competition is currently still in the group stages and has this year proven as dramatic as any other, perhaps not with an enormous amount of goals being scored (ignoring of course Portugal's 7-0 thrashing of the People's Republic of Korea) but instead stronger teams like England, France and Italy being held to draws against considerably weaker sides.

Monday June 21 will see the second match of the group stages completed, as Portugal play Korea DPR from group G and Spain and Honduras meet from Group H, as well as Chile and Switzerland from group H who will conclude play for the day.

On Tuesday 22 June the final games of the group stages will commence, ensuring every team plays to their full capacity to book their place in the second round. The final part of the group stages will see two games (the remaining games between the four teams in the group) played concurrently as to heed no advantage to either side.

South Africa can unfortunately only cling to a sliver of hope as they enter their final group match with France on Tuesday, having been held to a draw by Mexico at the opening game and later being beaten 3-0 by Uruguay, France will however be looking to clinch a victory over SA as they have failed to win a game as yet and are currently only third in the group.

To progress to the next stage of the competition, South Africa will have to produce a 3-0 victory over France and hope that Mexico beats Uruguay by the same margin. As it stands a draw between Mexico and Uruguay would see both teams progress past the group stages, and by the same token a draw between South Africa and France would see both the host nation and former champions knocked out of the competition.

Of the 32 teams entered into the 2010 FIFA World Cup, only three teams have managed to win both of their games played so far, namely Argentina, the Netherlands and Brazil, virtually guaranteeing their places in the knockout stages of the competition.

Another much spoken about topic regarding the 2010 FIFA World Cup has been the level of refereeing thus far, with questionable penalty and offside calls infiltrating the game and making it as unpredictable as ever.

Take the Brazil vs. Ivory Coast match for example, where Luis Fabiano after the game admitted to touching the ball with his arm twice before he knocked it into the back of the net giving Brazil a 2-0 lead that Ivory Coast could not come back from.

In the same game Brazilian striker Kaka was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in the latter stages of the game, his transgression having been when he lifted his elbow as an Ivorian player was running behind him and knocked him in the chest, the player fell down clutching his face and the referee, who didn't see the incident, took the Ivorian's side and dismissed Kaka, who will now miss the game against a potent looking Portugal on Friday 25 June.

But poor refereeing or not the game continues, and as the group stages draw to a close the competition is set to become more and more exciting as each game requires a win to stay in it.
