Vehicles Sales On the Up| News by Staff ReporterDomestic sales increased 30% year-on-year in September According to the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) strong gains were recorded in all vehicle segments during the past month. In a statement released on Tuesday Naamsa said aggregate industry domestic sales in September 2011 increased by 30% (12,539 units) to 54,364 units compared to September 2010. “Sales in all segments had registered surprisingly strong gains on the corresponding month last year,” Naamsa said. The association added that for the first nine months of 2011 domestic sales were still up 16,2% compared to the corresponding nine months in 2010. Sales in September last year were negatively affected by strike action across the industry, which led to major stock shortages. Export sales in September 2011 were at 25,933 units – an improvement of 13,399 vehicles, or 106,9% – compared to 12,534 units in September 2010. The new car market received continued support from the car rental industry, accounting for 21,4% of the total new car sales. The strength of the new car market, according to Naamsa, can be attributed to several factors, namely lower interest rates, lower prices, aggressive marketing and sales incentive programmes.
