Vehicle Sales +36,9% in August| News by Staff ReporterNaamsa recently released new vehicle sales figures – indicating a year-on-year improvement of 36,9 percent in August Naamsa, the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers SA, yesterday said vehicles sales in August increased by 36,9 percent compared to August 2009, while an increase of 12,7 percent was recorded from July 2010.Naamsa said aggregate industry sales increased by 12 502 vehicles in August 2010 compared to the corresponding month in 2009, from 33 875 to 46 377. These figures were in line with expectations, according to Naamsa, as pre-emptive buying to avoid the new CO2 car emissions tax, which was implemented on September 1, boosted sales by more than a third compared to last year. When excluding sales from Associated Motor Holdings and Amalgamated Automobile Distributors Naamsa increased sales by 40 235 vehicles (35,6 percent), of which 80,3 percent represented dealer or retail sales, 13,4 percent represented car rental industry purchases, 3,3 percent represented government purchases and 3 percent were industry corporate fleet sales. Naamsa said these figures represent the highest monthly new car market since January 2008, with improvements being noted in new light commercial vehicles, buses and minibuses (878 units), the middle and large truck segments (587 and 1 393 units respectively), as well as a modest improvement in light commercial vehicle sales. Despite these positive figures, Naamsa added that prolonged industrial strike action could have a negative impact on the industry in terms of credibility in international markets, where a poor track record as a reliable supplier of parts, vehicles and components can have lasting effects.
