Unemployment Increases in Q2| News by Staff Reporter59, 000 jobs lost in the second quarter of 2010 On Tuesday 27 June Statistics South Africa (stats SA) released their Quarterly Labour Force Survey, indicating a decline of 59,000 in South Africa's labour force when comparing the first and second quarters of 2010.Stats SA noted a decrease of 61,000 between the first and second quarters of 2010 with regard to employment, the largest decrease being reported for the formal sector, at 129,000, followed by agriculture and private households, at 32,000 and 14,000 respectively. These amounts were partially offset by an increase of 115,000 in the informal sector during the same period. The statistics company said the number of unemployed persons stayed virtually the same between quarter one and quarter two of 2010, while an increase of 68,000 in the number of discouraged work-seekers resulted in the unemployment rate remaining unchanged between the aforementioned periods. The second quarter of 2010, when compared to the second quarter of 2009, reflected an annual decrease of 4,7 percent (627,000) in employment, an increase of 4,5 percent (187,000) in the number of unemployed persons, and an increase of 5,6 percent (761,000) in the number of persons not economically active – 390,000 of which are discouraged work-seekers.
