As Jacob Zuma urges trade unions and ministers to find an amicable solution

South African President Jacob Zuma has called upon ministers and unions to bring about the expeditious end of the nation wide public servants strike, appealing to both sides to put the interests of their country first and foremost in negotiations.

Under this advisement Public Service Minister Richard Baloyi and trade union leaders held negotiations during which a draft settlement offer was produced, including a 7,5 percent wage increase and R800 monthly housing allowance.

Trade unions have demanded an 8,6 percent wage increase and R1 000 monthly housing allowance, but Zuma has urged both sides to put South Africa's interests first when negotiating to bring about the end of the strike as it enters its third week.

The trade unions have requested time to return to their members with the proposal but government has called on them to speed up the process.

In a statement released by the government on Monday spokesperson Themba Maseko said government was committed to finding an amicable solution to the dispute and shared the public's concern about the strike and its negative effects on education and health care.
