Voting for the New Seven Wonders of the World closes on Friday

Cape Town’s Table Mountain would see a 20% increase in tourism if it were named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, according to Western Cape Tourism MEC Alan Winde.

Table Mountain, along with 27 other finalists, including the Amazon in South America, Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, the Grand Canyon in the US, and Komodo in Indonesia, are in the running to be named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World announced on 11/11/11.

“If Table Mountain becomes one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature, tourism to our destination could increase by 20%,” said Winde.

“This would generate an additional R1,4-billion in revenue every year and support employment opportunities for around 11,000 people.

“We must show our support for Table Mountain by voting [for it] by every means possible,” he said.

But Table Mountain has not yet made the top-ten list, which includes:

The Dead Sea
The Grand Canyon in the US
The Great Barrier Reef in Australia
Vietnam’s Halong Bay
Jeita Grotto in Lebanon
Jeju Island in South Korea
The Indonesian island of Komodo
The Puerto Princesa underground river in the Philippines
The Sundarbans delta at the mouth of the Ganges River
Italy’s Mount Vesuvius

Spokesperson for the New Seven Wonders of the World campaign, Eamonn Fitzgerald, said although these are the names currently on the top-ten list it did not mean that they would stay there.

“With millions of votes still to come in, finalists who are not in today's top 10 could yet make it into the chosen seven,” he said.

Voting for the New Seven Wonders closes on Friday 11 November.
