SEACOM Back to Normal

| Technical by Staff Reporter

Due to a fault in the SEACOM network on the 14th of April many internet users in South Africa have subsequently experienced difficulties connecting to the internet.

Repairs to the cable were scheduled for the 17th of April but were delayed until the 24th, and due to poor weather conditions work only commenced on Sunday the 25th, resulting in the SEACOM service experiencing interruptions from around 12h00 on Sunday.

SEACOM currently uses the SEA-ME-WE 4 submarine cable - which stretches from South East Asia to Europe via the Sub-Continent and Middle East - to connect to London.

The fault in the SEA-ME-WE 4 cable occurred on the Mediterranean section of the cable and was speculated by SEACOM's head of product strategy, Suveer Ramadani, to have been caused by a ship's anchor.

SEACOM this morning reported that repairs to the cable had been successfully completed overnight, and customers were being reconfigured and migrated by SEA-ME-WE 4 and traffic should be completely restored by mid-morning.
