SASOL Shelves Fracking Plans| News by Staff ReporterThis decision has been welcomed by the Treasure the Karoo Action Group News of the petrochemical giant SASOL’s plans to shelve hydraulic fracturing exploration in the Karoo has been welcomed by the Treasure the Karoo Action Group.“We welcome SASOL’s decision, particularly as the company appears to have taken time to actually listen to the people of the Karoo and acknowledge their concerns,” the group said in a statement on their website. While the organisation was pleased with SASOL’s decision to shelve exploration for shale gas in the Karoo by means of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) it said there were other companies who had yet to do the same. The TKAG says it is leading the fight against what it calls exploitation of the Karoo by mining companies before independent research has been conducted. “Our aim is to convince Shell and other companies who have also applied for exploration rights (to) show the same genuine concern for the people who live in the areas that they propose to exploit and whose livelihoods and health could be placed in jeopardy as a result of fracking.” The TKAG said it would like to call on all residents of the Karoo and our supporters and members to join TKAG in congratulating SASOL on a responsible and sensitive decision. “We hope that this action by a global player in the energy field will act as a wake-up call to Royal Dutch Shell and other companies who still pursue their applications to frack in South Africa,” it concluded.
