SA Transport Systems Completed

| News by Staff Reporter

South Africa has, for a few years now, been hard at work planning and preparing for the 2010 Soccer World Cup, upgrading roads, building new infrastructure and improving service delivery, and the work put into the preamble to the World Cup has finally come to fruition.

The South African Minister of Transport, S'bu Ndebele, recently confirmed that South Africa's transport system is complete and ready to accommodate tourists and locals during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

One of the challenges of hosting the World Cup was providing reliable transport facilities allowing fans to travel across the country to support their teams, and Ndebele said the integrated transport system is now playing its role in ensuring the month-long soccer spectacle passes smoothly.

But South African's will enjoy the improved transport facilities and infrastructure for a long time after the World Cup, with upgraded roads, an integrated Transport Management Centre in Cape Town, various Bus Rapid Transit systems now in operation, as well as numerous new taxi's and upgraded stations, he said.

From a developmental perspective the 2010 FIFA World Cup has led to a boom in South Africa, creating many jobs and improving the infrastructure of the country, leading to long lasting effects that will be felt by South African's for many years to come, said the Minister.

Many South Africans have, however, voiced the opinion that their future has been mortgaged by the government, in that taxpayers will be footing the bill in the forseeable future, for the current upgrades.
