Retail Sales up 5,6% Y/Y in Feb

A year-on-year increase of 5,6 percent in retail sales was recorded in February 2011


Retail trade sales in February 2011 increased by 5,6 percent compared to the same month the previous year, according to official Stats SA data released on Wednesday.

The statistics firm said retail sales (in real terms) increased by 5,6% year-on-year in February 2011, with the main contributors to the increase being ‘retailers in hardware, paint and glass’ (16,7 percent) and ‘retailers in pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetics and toiletries’ (10,8 percent).

Stats SA said ‘retailers in household furniture, appliances and equipment’ also contributed to the year-on-year increase with a contribution of 7,7 percent.

Retail trade sales (in real terms) increased by 6,9 percent for the three months ended February 2011 compared with the three months ended February 2010.

“The main contributors to the increase of 6,9%,” according to Stats SA, “were ‘general dealers’ (5,4% and contributing 2,1 percentage points), ‘retailers in textiles, clothing, footwear and leather goods’ (5,9% and contributing 1,3 percentage points), ‘retailers in pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetics and toiletries’ (18,2% and contributing 1,0 percentage point) and ‘all other retailers’ (7,8% and contributing 1,0 percentage point).”

Seasonally adjusted trade sales

The statistics firm said in real terms (at constant 2008 prices), seasonally adjusted trade sales in February 2011 reflected a decrease of 1,0 percent when compared to the previous month.

“This followed month-on-month changes of 1,0% in January 2011 and 1,6% in December 2010,” added Stats SA.
