Proteas Poised to Take Series

| Sports by Staff Reporter

Following wins in both Paarl and East London

The Proteas will enter the third Sunfoil One-Day International (ODI) with their sights set on victory after winning both the first and second games earlier this month.

South Africa are on their way to sealing the five game series today (Tuesday) in Bloemfontein – which coincidentally would be the first time a series has been won in this city in nearly 20 years – as they enter the day’s play with a 2-0 advantage over the visitors.

AB de Villiers, the Proteas’ ODI captain, said, “It’s important for us to win the series, that is our first aim. A win would help with my self-confidence as captain, it’s a very big game for us, we are not taking it lightly.”

Two big names, however, will be missing from the Protea’s line up on Tuesday as Kallis and Amla sit the rest of the series out, giving Sri Lanka arguably their best chance of securing a win.

Cricket South Africa announced their decision to rest Kallis on Sunday while Amla has been granted time off as his wife is expecting their first child.

“There are a few guys sitting out but there are also new exciting players and I think the foundation of the squad is still intact and everything looks good,” said de Villiers.

Commenting on the pitch he said, “I think it’s going to be a high scoring game, I’m expecting a bit more runs here.

“Bloemfontein always comes up with a good wicket, hopefully there will be a bit more bounce, it looks well prepared but once again you can only tell on the day. Once we get a few overs in we’ll adapt as quickly a possible.”

The fourth ODI will take place at the De Beers Diamond Oval, Kimberly on the 20th of January while the fifth will take place at The Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg on the 22nd.
