Proteas On Top On Day 1| Sports by Staff ReporterOf the two-match test series against Australia Dale Steyn was South Africa’s star of the show during the first day of the opening for the two-match series test against Australia taking four wickets for 31 runs to put the Proteas on top.Despite fast bowler Dale Steyn snatching four wickets during the opening day, Australian captain Michael Clarke was able to produce an impressive 107 not out from 114 balls (including 17 fours) and prove himself to be a thorn in the side of the South African bowling line up. Vernon Philander, the debutant, took three wickets for 54 runs, helping to keep Australia down to 214 – 8 before poor light brought an end to the day’s play. Steyn said of the day’s play, “The ball did swing around. We went at a little bit more than we wanted to with the run rate but if you asked us at the start of the day if we wanted eight wickets, we would have taken that. A good day.” According to Clarke Steyn made it very difficult for him in the early stages of the match. “All I can picture is I started horribly,” the Australian captain said. “I just couldn’t get my head out of the way and Steyn kept getting it closer and closer to my head. “It’s a very special hundred,” he added. “I guess mainly because of the pressure when I went out there and it’s always nice to step up and lead from the front on a pretty tough day after being sent in.” Source: www.bizpremises.co.za |
