PPC to Upgrade Two Cement Plants in SA| News by Staff ReporterAs low demand for cement and poor economic conditions stifle the original plans PPC said yesterday that in light of the current economic conditions, coupled with a lower-than-expected demand for cement, the company would withdraw its environmental application for its Western Cape capacity expansion programme.PPC originally planned an expansion project that involved building a new cement plant with a capacity of 1,4 million tons per year, however, the company said these plans were made during peak times and after a drop of 40 percent in demand in the region they were hence unviable. Instead, the company said it would upgrade two of its existing operations, namely Riebeeck and De Hoek, which once completed would equal the capacity of the original project - increasing capacity in the Western Cape by 50 percent until 2016. A spokesman for the company said the revised plan would also still meet the environmental standards and energy efficiency criteria of the original plan. The revised plan, however, would require slightly less funding, at R3 billion instead of R4,5 billion, over a six year period as opposed to a four year period. No jobs would be shed as a result of the expansion, according to PPC, as labour would be absorbed in to the production lines. Source: www.bizpremises.co.za |
