OR Tambo International Airport 90% Complete

| News by Staff Reporter

The OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) upgrade is set for completion by the end of May this year in time for the much-anticipated FIFA World Cup, which takes place from the 11th of June to the 11th of July.

OR Tambo International Airport can expect its passenger numbers to soar during the World Cup period, and to deal with the expected increase ORTIA is undergoing a major R17 billion facelift, which includes: a R2 billion upgrade to the central terminal building; a multi-storey parkade; a R533 million international pier; as well as two jet fuel tanks, boosting the jet fuel storage capacity to 60 million litres.

The majority of construction has been completed (over 90 percent) and the final touches will take place this month and next month, with all operational plans being finalised by May 14.

South Africa is expecting nearly half a million football fans to pass through its airports during the tournament, and once all the upgrades at ORTIA have been completed the central terminal building - completed in December last year – will have the capacity to accommodate 28 million passengers a year.

OR Tambo will have 16 500 parking bays and 105 aircraft stands, and Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has stated that it plans to operate on a 24-hour basis as per match schedule. ACSA is in the process of training its staff in customer care, including basic language training in Spanish, French, German and Italian.

Many of South Africa's airports have recently been subject to major renovations, and these upgrades will go well beyond the 2010 World Cup in terms of air travel in South Africa.

The King Shaka International Airport in KwaZulu Natal has been completed and is set to open its doors for commercial operation on the first of May; the upgrade to Bloemfontein's airport terminal was completed in December; and the upgrades to the terminals at East London, Kimberley, and Upington will all be completed by next month.
