Nuclear Power on the Cards| News by Staff ReporterNew nuclear power plants have been proposed for South Africa Department of Energy Minister Dipuo Peters said a proposal for new nuclear power plants in South Africa had been signed off and would soon go to cabinet.Peters said she expected cabinet to make a decision on the proposal by the end of this year. Power from the proposed nuclear power plants would begin to be fed to the national grid in 2024 or 2045, she said, and that these plants would provide 9,600 MW of power, which is equal to around a quarter of the country’s current supply. Rising electricity demand has kept the country’s power utility Eskom under pressure and, together with the funding for construction of new coal-fired plants, has forced electricity prices to an all-time high. South Africa currently has just one nuclear power plant, Koeberg, in Cape Town, Western Cape. Should cabinet approve the proposal bidding would begin early next year, according to Peters.
