Manufacturing Production Turns Positive

Statistics SA announced on Thursday that manufacturing production increased by 2.7 percent year-on-year in February compared to a revised 3.5 percent growth in January.

The largest contributors to the growth in manufacturing production were the motor vehicles, parts and accessories division, showing an increase of 20.4 percent and contributing a total of 1.8 percentage points; and the basic iron and steel, non-ferrous metal products, metal products and machinery division, contributing 1.7 percentage points.

The petroleum, chemical products, rubber and plastic products division; at 3.4 percent, contributed 0.8 of a percentage point to manufacturing production in February 2010; and the radio, television and communication apparatus and professional equipment division contributed a total of 0.1 of a percentage point.

However, decreases were reported in the textiles, clothing, leather and footwear division; the furniture and 'other' manufacturing division; the wood and wood products, paper, publishing and printing division; the glass and non-metallic mineral products division; as well as the electrical machinery division, contributing a total of –0.6%; –0.5%; –0.4%; –0.4% and –0.2% respectively.
