Consumer inflation in July beats economists’ expectations

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) accelerated slightly more than expected to 5,3% in July 2011, according to official Statistics SA (Stats SA) data.

South Africa’s targeted inflation accelerated to 5,3% year-on-year from 5,0% in June Stats SA said on Wednesday.

“This rate was 0,3 of a percentage point higher than the corresponding annual rate of 5,0% in June 2011,” the statistics firm said.

Stats SA said the consumer price index rose to 0,9% month-on-month in July from 0,4% in June.

Economists had expected consumer inflation to accelerate 5,2 percent year-on-year and 0,8 percent month-on-month.
