Joburg Electricity Rates to be Revised| News by Staff ReporterThe City of Johannesburg is set to revise its proposed electricity tariff increases - which had initially been approved - after the City learned that Nersa (the National Energy Regulator of South Africa) had approved Eskom's 28.9 percent municipal tariff hike. Executive Mayor to the City of Johannesburg, Amos Masondo, said that the city 'learned with great shock' that from the 1st of July 2010 to the 30th of June 2011 municipal tariff rates would be increased by 28.9 percent, meaning the City would have to revise its tariffs that had been based on the initially approved increase of 24.8 percent. Masondo expressed his disappointment on behalf of the City of Johannesburg with regard to the electricity price hikes granted by Nersa, but added that it would be necessary to revise the rates or the city would lose out on over R200 million. Residents of Joburg have until the 30th of April 2010 to submit their comments and concerns on the draft budget and tariff increases, and written submissions can be handed in at any of the City's customer service centres in any of its seven regions. The water boards have also applied for various significant price increases, averaging over 16 percent for bulk water sold to municipalities. Residents of Johannesburg are again invited to comment on the proposed tariff increases until Friday the 30th of April 2010 at any of the City's customer service centres.
