Glitch Halts Trading at JSE Again

| News by Staff Reporter

No explanation has been given for the outage

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) was affected by a technical glitch on Tuesday 27 July, resulting in the cash equities market crashing and trade being halted for the second time in 15 days.

On the 12th of July the JSE was forced to commence trading an hour and a half later than normal due to a technical problem with the overseas network link, and now, for the second time in just over two weeks, the JSE has encountered technical difficulties that have resulted in the suspension of trading.

A spokesperson for the JSE said the nature of the problem was still being investigated.

The JSE said it had not yet decided whether to extend trading passed the normal time of close (17h00) on Tuesday due to the technical glitch.

The JSE rarely experiences technical difficulties that result in delayed or suspended services, however, in September 2008 trade was halted for several hours while connectivity problems were ameliorated, and, more recently, the JSE's regulatory news service failed to update for several hours in March of this year.
