Floods in KZN Claim Eight Lives| News by Staff ReporterHeavy rains on Sunday night resulted in the loss of eight lives in the province Flooding in Durban and Pietermaritzburg on Sunday claimed eight lives and damaged hundreds of homes as extreme weather conditions ravaged the area.Seven people are reported to have died in the Umlazi and Clermont townships on Sunday night, according to Mthatheni Mabaso, spokesperson for the cooperative governance department of KwaZulu-Natal. “We have been told they died when their houses collapsed. We have also been told that about 100 homes were flooded and damaged in Isipingo,” said Mabaso. Another man (44) was found in the rubble of his home in Quarry Heights, Durban. Referring to the damage of homes in more upmarket areas in Durban like Umhlanga and Newlands, Mabaso said it showed “that even the posh areas are not spared of the effects of climate change.” Mabaso said, “At around 1am, Netcare 911 paramedics, their rescue team as well as the SAPS search and rescue were called to the four houses that had flooded to waist deep in the heavy rain. Rescue personnel assisted an elderly lady and a baby less than one year to safety. Both were treated for the cold and the elderly patient had to be treated for an asthma attack.” This latest flooding and loss of life brings the total death toll from KwaZulu-Natal floods to 13 in less than two weeks.
