Eskom Warns of Rolling Blackouts

| News by Staff Reporter

As maintenance, both planned and unplanned, increases

South Africa’s power utility Eskom has announced that the possibility of rolling blackouts around the country is “very high”.

Spokesperson for Eskom Hillary Joffe on Monday said the utility was working closely with its large customers to see if they could reduce their load, “…but the risk is very high.

“We are doing our utmost to avoid it,” she said.

Joffe said one of the main reasons power outages were a possibility was because of planned maintenance.

“Summer is always a time when we do maintenance and take advantage of lower demand,” she said, adding that maintenance was more this year than previous years as Eskom is currently tackling a backlog.

As a result unplanned maintenance has increased as well as demand for power around the country.

“We are experiencing quite a lot of unplanned maintenance. We are not getting performance from our generating plants. There are also quite a lot of technical problems which are cutting supply further,” said Joffe.

Eskom has urged people to continue to find ways of reducing their electricity consumption.
