Electricity Wage Talks Break Down| News by Staff ReporterWage negotiations between NUM and Eskom have reached a stalemate The union NUM on Thursday said wage negotiations with employers at Eskom had broken down and it would thus request a mandate to strike from its members.Wage negotiations between South Africa’s state-owned power utility Eskom and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) have collapsed, according to NUM. The union yesterday (Thursday 4 August) said it would ask its members for a mandate to strike. Paris Mashego, chief negotiator in the NUM – Eskom wage talks, yesterday said, “A strike is no longer an option, it’s a reality.” But Eskom has warned that workers who go ahead with the strike action would face disciplinary charges as the supply of electricity is a protected essential service. Before the union can legitimately call a strike, however, certain other procedures must be followed, including the engagement of a mediator. Source: www.bizpremises.co.za |
