DTI Launches Supplier Programme| News by Staff ReporterThe Black Business Supplier Programme will assist black enterprises improve their competitiveness The Department of Trade and Industry will launch the revised Black Business Supplier Development Programme (BBSDP) today in Pretoria; an event aimed at supporting majority black-owned enterprises in South Africa. This year the BBSDP will be geared towards local, black-owned Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in an attempt to enhance their competitiveness through support services. Rob Davies, Minister of the Department of Trade and Industry said the scheme will provide enterprises with access to the support service, which will assist them in improving their core competencies, upgrading their managerial capabilities, as well as helping them to restructure their processes to become more competitive in the mainstream economy. The number of grants awarded have increased drastically since the BBSDP's inception in 2002, boasting 9,500 grants awarded to date, over half of which have been to women-owned enterprises. The total amount dispersed also increased from R3 million in 2002 to over R186 million over the same period. Successful applicants can be awarded a grant of up to R100,000, enabling both the DTI and the enterprise to partially contribute to the qualifying cost of a project. There are various criteria that applicants need to meet, including an annual turnover of less than R12 million and a minimum trading history of one year, and companies accessing the scheme will also be required to comply with commercial regulatory requirements applicable to their area of business, for example, registration with SARS.
