CT Proposes 80ha Housing Development| News by Matthew WoodEnvironmentalists say they have doubts The City of Cape Town has proposed developing a stretch of land between Zeekoevlei and Pelican Park, involving the construction of about 2,000 subsidised houses. This development would also be integrated with another development of 1,000 houses designed for the market, and a strip of mixed-use properties. The City of Cape Town said the National Housing Subsidy would go towards the 2,000 subsidised homes, while the developer would be required to fund the rest of the development as well as contribute funds to the subsidised houses to ensure that their quality does not affect the value of the 1,000 homes designed for the market. The area earmarked for development comprises 80ha of land worth R70 million, situated between Strandfontein Road and Zeekoevlei, and between Pelican Park and Eagle Park. The City of Cape Town's proposal has, however, sparked concern among environmentalists as the eastern shore of Zeekoevlei is one of the City's most sensitive areas. Many residents of the surrounding areas have too expressed concern as they fear the new development would have a negative affect on the value of their own properties. The City said that with improved quality throughout the development this need not be the case, and added that, as the development progresses and the land is occupied, illegal activities such as dumping and fires would all be minimised.
