Company Registration Backlog Soars

| News by Staff Reporter

Despite showing strong signs of improvement in August

The Companies and Intellectual Property Commission has reached a backlog of 13,000 despite showing a strong improvement in registrations in August.

Formerly known as the Companies and Intellectual Property Registration Office (CIPRO), the commission last year initiated a turnaround strategy aimed at alleviating the backlog of registrations in June, which had reached about 50,000.

Since improving in August (to around 4,000), however, the backlog has again climbed to a staggering 13,278.

This is due in part to an increased number of new applications, which totalled more than 53,000 between September and December, as well as a slowdown in the institution’s work processes.

According to Astrid Ludin, head of the commission, the high number of outstanding applications were due to an increase in new applications, the need to correct the numerous errors made by the commission while working under pressure, and the fact that there was still no mechanism for companies to register online.

She admitted that the performance of the call centre left “a lot to be desired”, adding that it would take the commission a minimum of 18 months to turn itself around.

“Things have stabilised and there are efforts at continuous improvement. However, much work still remains to be done,” said Ms Ludin.
