Cape Town has been awarded the title of Best Destination in Africa

Cape Town was for the seventh time awarded the title of Best Destination in Africa at the World Tourism Awards last week.

Cape Town has won the title of Best Destination in Africa every year barring 2004 and 2007 since 1998, beating out top locations like Luxor, Egypt; Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe; and Marrakech, Morocco.

The announcement was made at the World Tourism Awards last week where Cape Town was in the running against several other South African destinations, such as Durban, the Kruger National Park and Johannesburg, as well as various African cities.

Mariette du Toit-Helmbold, Cape Town’s CEO of Tourism, said awards were important for the profile and awareness of a destination, but that the awards should be followed-up by campaigns that convert the awareness into real visitors.

“Naturally we are proud of this award and the recognition it brings,” she said at the awards ceremony.

“Together with TripAdvisor’s Top Destination 2011 and more recently, Travel and Leisure’s World’s Best Cities vote, these accolades form an excellent platform for the launch of our national and international marketing campaign aimed at increasing demand for Cape Town.”

Du Toit-Helmbold added that Cape Town Tourism together with the industry had devised a more compelling and inclusive tourism marketing position for Cape Town aimed at going far beyond natural beauty.
