BlackBerry Loses Ground

| Technical by Staff Reporter

Has the BlackBerry rush come to an end?

Research In Motion (RIM), makers of the BlackBerry, on Thursday announced a decrease in its fiscal second quarter net income and revenue figures.

The firm said it had reported profits of $419-million, or 80c a share, for the three months ended August 27.

This is compared with $796,7-million, or $1,46 a share, during the same period last year.

Revenue over the same period dropped by 10% to $4,2-billion, compared with $4,6-billion the previous year.

RIM co-Chief Executive Jim Balsillie said one of the reasons for the poor figures were lower-than-expected sales on older BlackBerry models as consumers waited for the release of the BlackBerry 7 at the end of the quarter.

BlackBerry has also struggled to compete with iPhones and smartphones powered by Google’s Android, and in response RIM have developed a new QNX operating system set to be released early next year.
