Australia won the second test, levelling the series

Australia won the second test against South Africa to level the two-match series at the Wanderers on Monday.

Australia’s Pat Cummins scored the winning runs on the final day of the second test bringing the visitors to 8-310. The 18-year-old Cummins survived an LBW review before smashing SA bowler Imran Tahir to the boundary to clinch a win many thought would not be seen.

At the crease with Cummins was Mitchell Johnson, who managed to score a remarkable 40 n/o after Brad Haddin’s contribution of 55 runs from 106 balls.

Play seemed to be going South Africa’s way for the majority of the day, with poor weather threatening to rule out play from the start for Australia, then, once the skies had cleared, the dismissal of Michael Clarke in the fourth over, and then the fall of Ricky Ponting just before the drinks break.

Michael Hussey and Brad Haddin were able to build up a partnership of 50 runs but again things turned sour for Australia as Hussey was caught LBW 95 runs short of the target.

Johnson and Haddin proceeded to add another 50-run partnership to the scoreboard before Haddin’s dismissal, followed by Peter Siddle within two overs.

Cummins stepped up to the crease with 18 runs needed for victory, managing to hold fast and score 13 n/o to bring a close to the tournament.
