A Substitute for Talent?| Opinion by Matt WoodAre movies getting worse now that special effects are what we base our ratings on? Over the past few years films have been getting steadily better, with CGI, 3D and all the slow motion and rotating camera angles your heart could possibly desire, but there’s still something missing….Oh yeah, right, how could I forget good acting? But it seems that many people do; it’s as if the special effects (and these days they’re all the rage) negate the need for a good actor to make a good movie, and the result is a bunch of flashy films with no real acting talent to speak of. Don’t get me wrong, the way filmmakers have changed the industry in terms of effects is unbelievable and can only be for the better; I just wish a bit more focus was given to the actors, who before any of the computer tricks of today had to act well in order to make a good film. But maybe that’s just the problem: audiences of today are easily wowed with the glitz filmmakers are able to inject into an otherwise lifeless story, and that, together with the pretty faces so unrestrainedly crammed into every scene, is enough to please the masses who perhaps lack the capacity to notice poor acting in amongst all that sparkle. On the other hand, it’s the filmmakers who’re responsible for making the movies and surely it should be up to them to make sure they’ve got top-notch actors. But maybe they would if people started saying something, or boycotted a movie here and there? It even seems like the special effects wave has sucked the imagination out of Hollywood altogether – and the number of remakes in the pipeline (riddled with effects from here to North Africa) seems to support this idea. And it’s a shame, there is so much more to a good film than some expensive computer and camera trickery, yet we’re stuck with actors like Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart flooding the industry. All we need is a bit more balance; computer effects are awesome, but the focus needs to remain on the actors, after all they’re the ones really telling the story. Source: www.bizpremises.co.za |
