Joburg’s traffic is the fourth “most painful” in the world

If you’re looking for a reason to take the Gautrain to work look no further than the IBM commuter pain survey, which has found that Joburg ranks among the worst cities in which to travel.

According to the survey, conducted in 20 cities around the world with 8,042 participants, commuters in Johannesburg spend a minimum of 36 minutes in traffic – ranking together with Nairobi, Mexico City, Beijing, Bangalore and Moscow as the longest average global commute time.

The overall sentiment in Johannesburg, however, is rather upbeat, with just less than a third of the respondents saying they felt traffic had improved within the city “somewhat” or “substantially” this year, compared to just 19% last year.

The survey ranks both the emotional and economic effects of commuting and found that in terms of stress and anger felt by commuters, as well as the effect of stop-start traffic and congestion, Johannesburg ranked as the fourth most painful city to travel in, just three spots shy of Mexico City, the worst commuter destination in the world.

Gavin Pieterse, IBM governmental programmes executive for Sub-Saharan Africa, said the findings (specifically from Johannesburg) indicate significant room for improvement in smarter transport systems.

According to the survey if commuters’ time was freed up be better systems, around 50% of the respondents would spend it with loved ones or exercising.

Unfortunately, according to Vinodh Swaminathan, IBM director of intelligent transportation systems, “We can’t simply build our way out of congestion no matter which city.”
