5 Million Without Power in US| International News by Staff ReporterCaused by “human failure” at a substation in Arizona A major blackout in America, affecting areas in California, Arizona and Mexico, left nearly five million people without electricity on Thursday. The power failure led to disrupted water supplies, cancelled flights and closed schools, but police have reported no major incidents as a result. The disruption in electricity supply reportedly occurred when an employee at a substation in Arizona carried out a procedure, which led to the failure of a high-power line to the southern parts of California. This in turn led to a domino effect of power failures across the Southwest. President of San Diego Gas and Electric Michael Niggli said many customers could remain out of service for the next day or two. “We expect customers to be out for quite a while,” he said. “There was a very major outage, a region-wide outage,” said Mr Niggli. “There’s no doubt this has never happened before to our system.” The blackout has occurred at a time when California is in the midst of a heatwave, with temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, and residents are unable to use their air conditioning. “It feels like you’re in an oven and you can’t escape,”' said Rosa Maria Gonzales, a spokeswoman with the Imperial Irrigation District in California.
